The bunker, built in the early 1950s, is intended as the command post of an international air defence system protecting against a possible threat from Germany. However, the bunker never fulfils this function. NATO indeed takes over air defence, and the possible menace no longer comes from Germany, but rather from the Soviet Union. The Supreme Command of the Belgian Armed Forces then decides to fit the bunker as a command post, with extensive and modern communication systems, to be used for exercises or in case of crisis or conflict.
