This bunker was built in the early 1950s, during the Cold War, and was intended as a coordination centre for Western European air defence. It initially remained unused, but the Belgian army converted it in the 1960s into a headquarters to be used in the event of war or conflict, and for exercises. In the event of a Warsaw Pact attack, the Belgian General Staff was to retreat here to organize the country’s defence.

On Bunker Day, accompanied by an experienced guide, you will descend twenty metres into the belly of Mount Kemmel and discover a world full of secret missions, invisible enemies and constant tension sure to hit home. A historical reenactment brings the bunker back to life and gives you a realistic insight into its significance and impact.
