Bunker Day
Secret missions at Mount Kemmel
on Sunday, 7 June 2026
Bunkers are not only iconic structures in our landscape; they also constitute a tangible and fascinating part of our heritage. As silent witnesses to the past they remind us of the constant threat of war. From weathered ruins to impressively well-preserved structures: the unique aesthetics of these bunkers continue to capture the imagination.
Bunker Day provides you with the opportunity to discover the Kemmel Command Bunker up close. This bunker was built in the early 1950s, during the Cold War, and was intended as a coordination centre for Western European air defence. It initially remained unused, but the Belgian army converted it in the 1960s into a headquarters to be used in the event of war or conflict, and for exercises. In the event of a Warsaw Pact attack, the Belgian General Staff was to retreat here to organize the country’s defence.
On Bunker Day, accompanied by an experienced guide, you will descend twenty metres into the belly of Mount Kemmel and discover a world full of secret missions, invisible enemies and constant tension sure to hit home. A historical reenactment brings the bunker back to life and gives you a realistic insight into its significance and impact.
Do not miss this unique opportunity to discover the secrets of the Command Bunker. Register now and get ready for an unforgettable journey back in time. Moreover, participation is free.
